The Law Society of England and Wales has recently published its annual statistical survey showing the continued rise in the proportion of female solicitors. Although this is welcomed, it needs to be acknowledged that there are still barriers to women advancing to senior legal positions. The Association of Women Solicitors will continue to work on these issues, such as, stereotyping, underuse of flexible working and/or interpreting it is lack of commitment and of course the gender pay gap.
Jessica Standley, Chairwoman of The Association of Women Solicitors, London states that, “While we’ve come a long way since the first woman solicitor was admitted in 1923, the high attrition rate of associate solicitors today is a total waste of talent. Many women get fed up working hard without the recognition and this is quite unrelated to whether they have children or not.”
